There have to be some
Entries must be in English.
All work submitted for consideration must be the entrant’s original writing and must be free from AI generated content.
Entries can be up to 256 words. Minimum word count is 200. The title is not included in the word count and should be limited to a sensible length given these are flash fiction pieces.
Entries ideally should not have been published in print, or accepted for publication elsewhere. Posting a story on your own social media site or blog will not preclude you from submitting it to this competition.
Each entry must be submitted online along with a £2.56 entry fee.
You may enter as many stories as you wish, but each entry must be made separately.
There is no closing date for entries as this is a ‘rolling’ event.
By entering the competition, 256 stories is granted a once-only permission to publish the story in our anthology (the copyright will remain with the author).
Entries will be read to ensure that they do not contain racism, overtly erotic content, incitement to suicide, or any content directly targeting or denigrating an ethnic, religious or social group. Any story which may cause offence, will be referred back to the author, who can then amend the content or substitute a more acceptable story (there will be no additional fee for this).
This does not mean we will be employing sensitivity readers, just common sense.
No corrections will be accepted. Stories this short must be edited thoroughly before submission.
Entries submitted for consideration may be withdrawn by entrants by notification by email (please check we have received your email and confirmed your request). No refund will be made for withdrawn entries.
All entries should be submitted as a document in either Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), Open Document Text (.odt), or text file (.txt, .rtf). Each story will carry the name of the author under the title, if this is not in your file (you may use a pen name) we will use your default entry name.
NB – Personal information will not be used for any form of marketing or communication, other than connection with the anthology, nor passed to any third party without permission.
